The easiest way to show up in AI search results is to publish one page that answers the exact question your buyers ask, with the answer in its first two sentences, on a site Google and Bing can index. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews build their answers from pages they can find and quote. A plain answer on a page they can read is the shortest path to being cited.
Small sites get cited for this all the time. When we asked this exact question 20 times on 30 Sep 2026, most of the pages the AI tools cited were blog posts from marketing companies, and no AI visibility tool was recommended in any answer.
What did AI say when we asked it 20 times?
We asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode "What is the easiest way to show up in AI search results?" five times each on 30 Sep 2026. Nineteen answers came back. One AI Overviews request failed.
- No AI visibility tool was recommended in any of the 19 answers. The answers named places to be seen instead, like Reddit in 10 answers and LinkedIn in 7.
- Gemini cited the same three marketing company blogs in all five of its answers.
- Google AI Overviews cited the same four blog posts in all four of its answers.
- ChatGPT mostly cited the search engines' own help pages, from Google, Bing and OpenAI.
- Google AI Mode named one software company once, and only because it cited that company's blog post on the topic.
The pages that get cited are ordinary posts that answer the question plainly. And the one company that got named was named because its own page was the source. Single answers are samples, and these change week to week, so treat them as a snapshot of one day.
The easiest way, step by step
1. Write down the questions your buyers ask AI
Start with the questions people type into ChatGPT before they buy what you sell. Write them the way a buyer says them, not the way your website describes you. "How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Denver?" beats "remodeling services". "What's the easiest way to schedule social posts?" beats "social media management platform".
Five to ten questions is enough to start. Pick the ones a buyer asks right before they choose someone.
2. Answer each question on its own page
Give every question its own page and put the answer in the first two sentences. AI tools lift short, direct answers, so lead with the answer and explain after.
Then make the page easy to quote:
- Use the buyer's question as the title.
- Use the follow-up questions as the section headings.
- Put real facts on the page, like prices, the places you serve, how long things take and what's included.
- Add a short FAQ at the end with the questions people ask next.
Ten of the 19 answers we collected mentioned an FAQ section, so the AI tools are telling you what they like to quote.
3. Let the AI crawlers read your site
A page AI can't read never gets cited. Two checks cover most sites.
Google says a page can appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode when it is "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." Its guide adds that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Check your page in Google Search Console and make sure it carries no noindex or nosnippet tag.
For ChatGPT, the crawler to know is OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's crawler for search. OpenAI says sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Open your robots.txt and make sure it doesn't block OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says a change there takes about 24 hours to apply.
Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools too. It's free and it gets new pages found sooner.
4. Get mentioned where AI already looks
AI tools trust what other sites say about you as much as what you say about yourself. The answers we collected kept pointing to the same places: reviews, Reddit threads, LinkedIn, YouTube and industry blogs.
Pick the two or three that fit your business. A local business starts with its Google Business Profile and reviews. A software company starts with comparison posts and community threads. An agency starts with case studies on its own site and posts on LinkedIn.
5. Ask AI your questions again every week
You only know if it worked by asking. Put your buyer questions into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google every week and note who gets named and which pages get cited. When a competitor is named and you aren't, read the page that got them cited. It shows you what the engine wanted to quote.
Answers change often, so one check tells you about one day. A weekly habit tells you the trend.
What can you skip?
Google is plain about this. Its guide says "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."
Schema can still help software read your prices, reviews and address, so add it when you have time. If your time is short, spend it on steps 2 and 4.
How long does it take to show up?
It varies by question and by engine. Some pages take weeks to get cited, and some never do because a stronger page already answers the question better.
The fastest wins come from questions where nobody gives a clear answer yet. This question was one of them on 30 Sep 2026: no tool was named in any of the 19 answers we collected.
How Amaware makes this easy
Every day, Amaware asks the questions your buyers ask on the three engines you pick from ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. It shows you who gets named instead of you. Then it gives you simple recommendations of what to publish, writes the page in your voice, and publishes it to your WordPress, Webflow, HubSpot or Next.js site. Then we watch for AI to start naming you.

FAQ
Do I need a big brand to show up in AI search results?
No. On 30 Sep 2026, Gemini and Google AI Overviews cited blog posts from marketing companies for this exact question in every answer they gave. A clear answer on an indexed page counts for more than the size of the company behind it.
Do I need schema markup or an llms.txt file?
Google says you don't need new machine readable files, AI text files, markup or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Schema can help software read your prices and reviews, and it's optional.
How do I make sure ChatGPT can find my site?
Make sure your robots.txt doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler. OpenAI says blocked sites won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply.
Does showing up in Google help me show up in AI search?
For Google's own AI features, yes. Google says a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same clear, indexed page is also what ChatGPT and Gemini can find and quote.
How do I know if my business shows up in AI search results?
Ask the questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, every week, and write down who gets named. Or see what AI says about you with Amaware's free check, which runs your buyers' questions through the real engines and shows who gets named instead of you.
