A single clear webpage surrounded by blurred copies in darkness, showing how to make your business visible in Google AI Overviews

To show up in Google AI Overviews, your page has to be indexed by Google and allowed to show a snippet, and it has to answer the searcher's question more plainly than the other pages Google can pick from. Google says there is nothing extra to add. For a business, that means a page for each question your buyers ask, a complete Google Business Profile, and reviews and mentions on the sites Google already trusts.

What does Google say it takes?

Google's guide to AI features, last updated 10 Dec 2025, is short and specific. To appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements."

It goes further: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." And: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."

So nobody can sell you a special file or a secret tag that gets you in. Google picks from pages it has indexed and can quote. Your job is to be the clearest page it can quote for the questions your buyers ask.

What did AI say when we asked this question 20 times?

On 30 Sep 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode "How do I get my business to show up in Google AI Overviews?" five times each. Sixteen answers came back. Four of the AI Overviews requests failed, which happens with live captures.

  • Google Business Profile came up in 12 of the 16 answers. For a local or service business, it was the most repeated piece of advice.
  • Reviews came up in 12 of the 16 answers, and an FAQ section in 11.
  • Reddit was cited as a source in 8 of the 16 answers. Google AI Mode cited a Reddit thread in four of its five answers.
  • ChatGPT cited Google's own help pages in all five of its answers. It sent people straight to the source.
  • Gemini cited the same marketing agency's blog in all five of its answers.
  • No AI visibility tool was named in any of the 16 answers.

An agency blog got cited in every Gemini answer, so this question is winnable for a business your size. Google's AI quotes pages that answer the question plainly, whoever wrote them. One day of answers is a sample, so read these as a snapshot of one day.

How to show up in Google AI Overviews, step by step

1. Make sure Google can index and quote your page

Open Google Search Console and inspect the page you want in AI Overviews. It should say the page is indexed. Then check the page doesn't carry a noindex tag or a nosnippet tag. Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls that limit how a page appears in its AI features.

If you've never set up Search Console, do that first. It's free and it's where Google tells you what it can and can't see.

2. Write one page for each question your buyers ask

AI Overviews show up on questions. So the page that gets quoted is the one that answers the question best. Write a list of the questions people search before they hire you or buy from you, in their words:

  • "How much does a roof replacement cost in Austin?"
  • "Is a med spa facial worth it?"
  • "What's the best way to manage Instagram comments for a small business?"

Give each question its own page. Put the answer in the first two sentences. Use the follow-up questions as headings and finish with a short FAQ. Add the facts a buyer needs to decide, like prices, areas you serve and how long the work takes.

3. Fill out your Google Business Profile completely

Twelve of the 16 answers we collected pointed to Google Business Profile, and it's the step most local businesses leave half done. Add your services with descriptions, your service area, your hours, real photos, and answers to the questions customers ask most. Keep your name, address and phone number identical to what your website says.

If you sell online or nationwide, the same idea applies to the places that describe your company, like your LinkedIn page and the review sites in your industry.

4. Earn reviews and mentions where Google looks

Google's AI leans on what other sites say about you. In our sample, the answers kept pointing to reviews, Reddit, YouTube and industry blogs. Ask happy customers for reviews every week. Answer questions in the Reddit communities and forums where your buyers talk. Get your business into the round-ups and comparison posts that already show up for your questions.

5. Check the real AI Overviews for your questions

Google counts AI Overviews traffic inside the regular numbers in Search Console. Its guide says these visits are reported in the Performance report, "within the 'Web' search type." That means Search Console won't show you which AI Overviews named you.

So check the answers themselves. Search your buyer questions in Google every week, note whether an AI Overview appears, who gets named in it and which pages it links to. When a competitor's page gets linked and yours doesn't, read that page. It tells you what Google wanted to quote.

How long does it take to show up in AI Overviews?

There is no set timeline. A page has to be indexed first, which can take days for a new page. After that it depends on how many other pages answer the same question and how plainly they do it. Questions with thin answers today are where a new page shows up fastest.

How Amaware makes this easy

Every day, Amaware asks the questions your buyers ask on the three engines you pick from ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. It shows you who gets named instead of you and which pages get linked. Then it gives you simple recommendations of what to publish, writes the page in your voice, and publishes it to your WordPress, Webflow, HubSpot or Next.js site. Then we watch for AI to start naming you.

FAQ

Why does AI Overviews name my competitor and not me?

Usually because their page answers the question more plainly, or because yours isn't indexed or eligible to show a snippet. Search the question, open the page the AI Overview links to, and compare it with yours. Then answer the question better, in the first two sentences.

Do I need schema markup to show up in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there's no special schema.org structured data you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Schema can still help Google read your prices, reviews and address, so it's worth adding when you have time.

How do I stop Google from using my page in AI Overviews?

Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls. Each one limits how much of your page Google can show, in AI Overviews and in regular results.

Does Search Console show my AI Overviews traffic?

Yes, mixed in with the rest. Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode visits in the Performance report, within the Web search type, so you can't separate them there. To see whether you're named, check the answers directly.
